Hollywood Stands on Top of Kilimanjaro, Jimmy Chin Does Climb in Flipflops

Jessica Biel, Emile Hirsch, Lupe Fiasco, a club-load of other celebs, activist Alexandra Cousteau, Everest vet/guide Melissa Arnot, and others made it to the top of Mt. Kilimanjaro today on a mission to raise awareness about the lack of clean drinking water faced by millions. Well, good for them. Kili might be a walkup, but 19,341 feet is 19,341 feet and they did it under the own power. No snark here. The element that strikes me most about this summit photo, though, is that almost everyone in the group is swaddled in down and many are even rocking goggles, but photographer Jimmy Chin is dressed pretty much the way I last saw him in the snow, out the north side J-Hole backcountry: Little more than a North Face shell and little beanie. Oh, and here he’s barehanded (one) and sporting shades. That cat is chill.>>>

There may be some mysto hardcore waterwoman out there somewhere who’s saddling unknown big wave spots, but it’s highly unlikely, so all due props go to Maya Gabeira for shredding this massive tanker at Dungeons, South Africa, two days ago. Here’s a slightly different angle than shown previously–makes the wave seem even bigger.

Too much work, not enough time…it’s a good day for daydreaming about far-off places, changes in latitude, light that slants at a new angle. Here are three escape hatches, free wallpapers from the Erg Chebbis dunes in Morocco’s slice of the Sahara Desert, the Italian Dolomites near Cortina (in honor of this week’s story on mountain biking there), and a beautiful panel of petroglyphs somewhere in Utah. Enjoy!

Conservation rangers from an anti-poaching unit work with locals to evacuate the body of Senkwekwe, a 530-pound silverback, one of four mountain gorillas killed in mysterious circumstances in Virunga National Park, Eastern Congo. The alpha male was shot and three females were also killed. Two of the females had babies and the other was pregnant. The two babies were not found and it’s thought that they will have died of stress and dehydration.

The April/May issue of National Geographic Adventure just hit newsstands and I’m super-stoked to report it features the annual fall travel and apparel guide shot in South Africa a few months ago.

Much has been made of an African-American being elected president a century and a half after the outlawing of slavery in the United States. And for good reason—we’ve come a long way. But for those who’ve read Ben Skinner’s powerful A Crime So Monstrous: Face-to-Face With Modern-Day Slavery, the accolades might have rung ironic, for as Skinner points out, there are more slaves now than at any point in history—perhaps as many as 27 million people working in bondage.

When good trips go bad, bad trips get worse, and you step off the map of expectations into the reality of uncertainty, that’s when The Accidental Extremist appears. This fantastically entertaining new website by Christian DeBenedetti, a writer for Esquire, the New York Times, and…

Most of us dream of flying. Some of us dream of shooting for National Geographic. Only George Steinmetz has achieved both–and at the same time. Steinmetz, 51, has spent much of the last 12 years motoring above the African landscape in a gas-powered paraglider, engine and propeller strapped to his back, camera in both hands. His aerial images are deeply saturated with color, richly detailed, and…

Driving the backroads of North Africa is nothing less than a total immersion in the exotic-from casbahs and markets to mountains and desert sands.
