At this point, we shouldn’t need to be reminded of the negative consequences of living in a plastic world. The message should be clear. Unfortunately, it isn’t. Everywhere you look, there are more plastic bags, more plastic bottles, more indiscriminate use and trashing of a material that simply never goes away, just gets smaller and smaller until it becomes an almost cellular part of wildlife. This powerful little video from Surfrider Foundation is an in-your-face reminder of what we should already know.
But then what? The simple action steps of bringing your own cloth bags when you shop and using a refillable bottle for your drinks can have a big impact. And even if you already do this, no doubt there’s someone you know who doesn’t. Here’s the impact a few small moves can make:
Using a refillable bottle keeps 167 disposables from the environment.
One reusable cloth grocery bag prevents 400 plastic ones from use.
Every 13 plastic bags you don’t use save enough petroleum to power a car one mile.
