Forests Are Disappearing With the Striking of a Match

Surrounded by environmental, er, challenges, one of the toughest things is wrapping your head around the magnitude of the problems enough to break through your inertia and take action. Greenpeace Switzerland put together this striking video on just how fast the planet is being deforested–every two seconds, another soccer field’s worth of trees is gone (and I don’t think that includes bark beetle kills). Something to think about as you watch the World Cup.

Of course it wouldn’t (or shouldn’t) include beetle killed pine. Deforestation means a permanent (in human terms) conversion of forest cover to some other land type.
