Photographers are nothing if not confident. Here’s what Sean Stiegemeier said about his Icelandic volcano time lapse video: “So I saw all of these mediocre pictures of that volcano in Iceland nobody can pronounce the name of, so I figured I should go and do better.” Atta boy!

Well, you know what? He did. Sean killed it. After eight days of delays, he finally got 36 hours of good weather and shooting time, and his time lapse of Eyjafjallajokull and the surrounding landscape is simply stunning.

As regular readers know, I’m a sucker for time lapses, which are exploding right now thanks to the boom in DSLR cameras, and what makes this one particularly dynamic is Stiegemeier’s use of a motorized dolly track that puts the camera in motion as it’s shooting. It was provided by Dynamic Perception and was version 2.1 of a prototype track. DP is currently working on version 2.2 and hopes to have the rig available soon for under a grand.

Wanna see how it works? Check out this cool video of DP 2.1 in action.

Loved both of these videos. The blurring of technologies, i.e. DSLR for video, makes me wonder if time lapse is photography or videography. There are elements of each craft in these time lapse videos.

I can see a market for the Dolly. With DLSRs so cheap to produce sensational HD video I think these dollies will be a big hit.
