It’s tough to say which is more entertaining in this 1970s ski jumping segment from Dick Barrymore, the clothes or the sheer infinite number of ways proto-huckers can go cattywampus in the air. Eventually, you start pulling for someone to stick a landing…but not for a while. Seeing that wild hot dog hair caked with snow, the skin-tight suits accelerating down the landing hill, the dudes still trying to look cool while they’re tumbling like toddles at Mommy & Me…watching yet another starfish never quite gets old.

The thing about ’70s ski jumping, unlike today, is that you had the sense that anyone could do it–all it took was a little brass. The jumps weren’t that big, the landing hill was soft, a coupla helis and you’re good to go. At the end of the day there’s a bag of goodies and a bottle of wine waiting…yes, the 1970s might have been the peak of civilization on this planet.

Great old film. Didn’t see Wayne Wong or John Clendenin in there, but maybe a young Scott Brooksbank? Thanks for the trip down to days long past!

Cool video. The ’70’s were the best. Wish we could go back and do it again. I remember spring days learning to ski at Alta on a tow rope, there were loudspeakers on the hill blaring out Styx “Lady” at full volume. It was awesome. more….. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7r2ybCRm-Kk

The older I get the more awesome I was. I used to have a knitted ski hat that read: “MORE HAIR MORE AIR”

I remember busting double daffy’s and spread eagles under the chairlift in junior-high…man those were the days! Then I got into snowboarding…bought my first board…a Gnu! Remember those!?
