From a guy’s perspective, it’s a shame the Roxy On Ear headphones are designed to be so girlie because they rock just about the best sound reproduction you can buy for $70. From the female perspective…you want these.
A few years ago, I tested a pair of $900 custom in-ear monitors from Sensaphonics, which had such amazing fidelity they exposed the crappy 128K MP3 rips I’d made from my CDs—I had to rerip my entire collection at a higher bit rate so the Sensas could do their beautiful thumping thing. The Roxys don’t approach that level of acoustic purity, but for 70 bones not much else comes close—and if you’re looking for pink, these are the ones.
They’re super light–just five ounces–and compact nicely for travel. Made by JBL, they lay down a thick bass line without ever getting bogged in the swamp funk you find in so many DJ cans. They play a nicely layered mix, with midtones carrying their weight and the upper end is still bright and sharp. Reminds of peanut butter toast—a thick slab of creamy peanut butter is the bass, a schmear of honey for the mids, and a dusting of cinnamon for the highs. Yes, the Roxys are sweet.
