Okay, it’s not the worst bike recall ever. That prize would have to go to something like like broken steerer tubes or forks. But the Consumer Product Safety Commission has just announced problems with SRAM’s PowerLock connectors on its bike chains.
The PowerLock link is found as original equipment on some bikes, on aftermarket chains, and as a standalone aftermarket accessory. About 24,000 were sold. You can identify the affected links with a date code of M or N located on the side of the PowerLock connector. Chain model numbers affected are PC-1030, PC-1050, PC-1070, PC-1090 and PC-1090R. Bike brands that spec’d the PowerLock are Guru, Surly, Salsa, BMC, Serotta, Seven, and Ridley brand complete bicycles. The individual PowerLock connectors and bike chains with these connectors were sold from January 2009 through August 2009; bicycles with affected chains were sold from April 2009 through August 2009.
Contact your local SRAM dealer for a replacement or see www.sram.com.
