Sadly, frighteningly, bikes are one of the most commonly recalled outdoor products, and the Consumer Product Safety Commission has announced quite a few callbacks in last month or two, including models from Cannondale, Dahon, Norco, REI, and Trek. Is your bike among them? Take a look.

Past recalls reported on The Adventure Life:

April 2009, 17,000 Specialized bikes.
February 2009, Bowtech compound bow, Marzocchi suspension bike forks, Mavic road bike wheels, Nordica alpine ski bindings.
January 2009, Atomic ski bindings, Jetboil stove, L.L. Bean ice cleats, Outdoor Research heated gloves.
September 2008, 322,000 Petzl headlamps.

CANNONDALE
1,500 Cannondale bikes are being called back because the suspension forks can shift alignment, causing the front wheel to turn unexpectedly. Models are from 2008 and include the Adventure 2, Adventure 3, Adventure 2 Feminine and Adventure 3 Feminine bicycles. The forks have “Cannondale AT35 Adventure Trail” printed on them. Bicycles equipped with the Rock Shox i-ride fork are not included in the recall.

REPORTED INJURIES: None.

DAHON (WITH REI)
There have been 25 reports of the hinge breaking on 2008 model year Dahon and REI folding bikes, with 11,500 units affected. If your bike has an “R” embossed on the face of the upper handlepost hinge and/or a “Radius Handlepost” sticker on the handlepost, you’re okay.

Models recalled are: Dahon Ciao P8, Curve D3, Curve SL, Glide P8, Jetstream P8, Mu P8, Mu P24, MU SL, Mu XL Sport, Vitesse D7 HG, Speed D7, Speed P8, Speed TR, Speed Pro TT, Mariner D7; and REI Novara Buzz FlyBy and FlyBy Shuttle. The bikes were sold from March 2008 through April 2009 for between $430 and $1,300.

REPORTED INJURIES: Just one incident, with scrapes and bruises.

NORCO
About 3,600 units are being recalled by this Canadian company over frames breaking—always a problem, but especially so on freeride bikes. Models are 2007 Team DH, 2008 Team DH, Aline Park, Aline, Atomik, Shore 1,2,3, 2009 Atomik (without gussets) and were sold from September 2006 through February 2009 for between $2,000 and $7,000.

REPORTED INJURIES: One broken collarbone.

REI
The fork on REI’s 2005 Novara Trionfo can separate from the steerer tube, which essentially means your front wheel breaks off. The Aprebic carbon-fiber forks are black, the bikes blue and white. About 260 units are affected and they were sold from January 2005 through August 2006 for $720 to $1,900.

REPORTED INJURIES: Broken collarbone, broken teeth, facial damage, and head trauma.

CONTACT: (800) 426-4840, www.rei.com.

TREK
Ouch: 16,000 Treks are involved in this one. As with the Cannondale recall, the Bontrager SPA forks can shift alignment suddenly, which can result in unexpected direction changes. Affected are model year 2009 Trek 7300, 7300WSD, and 7500 bikes. The bikes were sold from August 2008 through April 2009 for between $640 and $940.

REPORTED INJURIES: None.
