A few weeks ago, I posted a couple of pieces on making time lapse movies with your still camera or iPhone. Nobody who read the piece and saw the videos I made suffered the illusion that they were anything but rudimentary, so now I thought I’d bring you time lapse video that’s extraordinarily well done. Australian shooter Keith Loutit makes wonderful little time lapse movies and what makes them particularly charming is his use of tilt-shift perspective, which provides selective blurring and makes his subjects look like miniatures.
Take this monster truck rally. Even though you know it’s real, with real big trucks and real big people, you’re going to have to remind yourself repeatedly that they aren’t toys. It’s well worth three minutes and 43 seconds on a Monday. Oh, and FWIW, the demo derby section at 1:45 is a crackup.
See more of Loutit’s videos on his Vimeo channel here.

Very cool indeed! Someone should consider applying to outdoor subjects… perhaps a duo of climbers on some beautiful multi-pitch arete??
Have you seen this one? http://www.vimeo.com/3156959
Another fine time-lapse that uses tilt-shift. I really like the song, too.

This one shows a glacier moving!
That is awesome, makes you second guess reality.
It’s also insanely funny because they really do look like toys and then you realize they are all grown-ups…
