If your idea of surf art is the movie poster from The Endless Summer, it’s long past time for an update—that wave crashed on the shore long ago. This, in fact, is a new golden era for surf art, with artists like Wolfgang Bloch, Harry Daily, Jeff Canham, Alex Weinstein, and many others creating a new and incredibly eclectic wave-riding aesthetic. Unfortunately, there are only two surf galleries of note, The Surf Gallery in Laguna Beach and Mollusk Surf Shop in San Francisco. Fortunately, however, there are two surf galleries of note, which is two more than just a few years ago.
One of them, Mollusk, has a sweet new line of surf posters for sale. Many of the posters are from Mollusk’s recent poster exhibition and, too, many are for Thomas Campbell’s latest movie, The Present. Prices are darned affordable—about $50 for a poster and $100 and up for prints—and of course they help nurture the livelihood of these guys and girls so they can keep making art and, eventually, more little surf artists.
You can order online or stop into the shop at 4500 Irvine Street and see the current exhibit, “YAR: Art Stuff Derived from the Surf Film, The Present”. There’s also boards, books, and more.
