Prana Pulls Plug on Scapegoat Brand

The outdoor industry has seen lots of layoffs in this economic implosion, but surprisingly few big name closings. And there actually have been some happy endings–sustainable darling END Footwear was just rescued by LaCrosse for a half-million dollar buyout. Unfortunately for Scapegoat, maker of hip technical outerwear, parent company Prana has shuttered the operation.

You might be saying, “Who?”

Scapegoat was barely two years old and had a tiny presence in the outdoor space. But it was a cool brand staffed by people who get it–that is, people trying to bring a fresher look to technical apparel. It originally sprang from an independent design shop called Sid Factor Seven–companies such as Black Diamond, The North Face, and Burton turn to outside collectives like SFS for help with product creation–as an alternative to the me-too jackets you see on so many racks. Then Scapegoat was snatched up by Prana, it showed a sweet women’s line at the Outdoor Retailer show, and soon the word was it was going to be rebranded as Prana outerwear. Some time earlier this year, though, Prana very quietly closed things down.

Well, shoot.

On the other hand, the Sid Factor Seven folks still have lots of ideas. Let’s look forward to the expiration of their non-compete contract with Prana…

Two favorites from the Scapegoat line. RIP.

Interesting news Steve. It’s not trying to change the me-too paradigm. Scapegoat had some good looks. Change is hard for the establishment but retailers want it – that’s why we’re growing so fast. Keep up the good work.
