Specialized Bikes is recalling 17,000 mountain and road bikes in two separate, voluntary recalls. Handlebars on 14,000 mountain bikes can break, which could kind of be a problem. Also, 3,000 Roubaix road bikes have an issue with a cable stop, which can come loose.
The mountain bike recall affects 2009 models Cross Trail Comp, Myka HT Comp, Myka HT Elite, Rockhopper, Rockhopper Comp and Rockhopper Comp 29. The handlebars are model HR, with serial number ALR-13 NTFOV located underneath the right hand grip of the handlebar. There have been two reports of bars breaking, one of which resulted in a head injury. See a PDF of the recall, with photos of the handlebars, here.
The road bikes at issue are from 2004, models Roubaix Comp 18, Roubaix Comp 27, Roubaix Pro 18, and Roubaix Pro. The bikes have a single-rivet cable stop on the top tube. Bikes with double-rivet cable stops are not affect. See PDF of the recall, with photos of the cable stops, here.
Bikes should be taken to a Specialized dealer for handlebar replacement or cable stop repair. Specialized’s recall hotline is 877.808.8154 and its recall page is here.
