Not long ago, rumors started flying that Outdoor Research was having some overheating issues with its Primavolta electric gloves. Sure enough: The company just issued a recall for the $260 product. And yesterday, L.L. Bean recalled the unfortunately named Stabilicer Lite ice cleats. This follows recalls for certain Jetboil stove models and Atomic ski bindings.
Approximately 900 pairs of the O.R. gloves have been sold since the Primavolta went on sale last September. There have been five reported incidents of overheating and one reported injury. If you own the Primavoltas, return them to O.R. immediately for a refund. Call (888) 467- 4327 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. PT Monday through Friday, or go to outdoorresearch.com. Read the Consumer Product Safety Commission report here. Note that there have been no reported problems, issues, or conflagrations with Mountain Hardwear’s Rad Savina heated gloves, which use the same heating system but apply it differently.
“Lite” is the operative word for the L.L. Bean ice cleats: The elastic harness on the Stabilicers Lite can break, resulting in a loss of traction and the strong likelihood of falling and being unable to get up. 7,000 were sold. The recall only affects blue, orange, and pink cleats, model BNX9. Contact Bean at 800.555.9717 or llbean.com. CPSC page here.
Things have gotten a little too hot with Jetboil, too: Stoves using its “B”-style valve are known to leak gas, with the leaking gas occasionally igniting. Sweet—if you’re planning on lobbing a Molotov cocktail. No injuries have been reported. The stoves in question have a silver gas valve can be identified by the unstamped valve. “C”-style valves, which are silver and stamped with a letter or number, are unaffected. Contact Jetboil at 888-611-9905 or jetboil.com/recall.
The Jetboil recall was announced in December, as was Atomic’s. The Austrian company’s recall affects 125,000 units in the States and another one million worldwide: Heel units are breaking for no apparent reason, resulting in early release, which might be okay if you’re incarcerated, but not so good if you’re ripping through a rock garden.
Models affected are Race 310, Race 412, RaceRace 310, RaceRace 412, Xentrix 310, Xentrix 311, Xentrix 412, C310, C311, C412, CR 310, CR 412, R 310, R 412, SX 310, SX 412, Device 311, Device 412, Centro 310, Centro 412, and Dynamic ADX 312, RD10, X412, Centro 412. Years recalled are 1998 through 2002—you can see the year on the underside of the heel lever. Contact Atomic at (888) 535-7555 or atomicsnow.com. CPSC recall page here.
